Beetle Identification Reference for North Texas
Knowing which beetle you’re looking at is the first step toward the right treatment. Here’s a quick reference for the species most likely to appear in North Richland Hills homes and yards.
Ground Beetles
Shiny black or dark brown with a flattened body and long legs. Found under debris, logs, and stones outdoors. Enter homes at ground level through gaps and cracks. They don’t damage structures or household materials, though their presence indoors suggests outdoor populations are high.
Carpet Beetles
Adults measure 2 to 5 mm and are oval with varied or solid black patterning. The larvae, not the adults, cause the damage. They’re hairy, slow-moving, and found near damaged textiles, inside vents, or in stored materials in closets and attics.
Cigarette & Drugstore Beetles
Both are small (2 to 3.5 mm) and reddish-brown. The drugstore beetle has a distinctly cylindrical body; the cigarette beetle is more rounded and oval. Found in pantries, stored grains, spices, and dried goods. Fine powder or frass near infested packages is often the first sign.
Japanese Beetles
About half an inch long with a distinctive metallic green body and copper-brown wing covers. Grubs are C-shaped and cream-colored, found in soil beneath lawns. Adult feeding produces a skeletonized pattern on the leaves of ornamentals and garden plants.
Click Beetles
Elongated and flattened, brown or black. Named for the audible click produced when they right themselves. Their larvae, wireworms, are soil-dwelling and can damage plant roots in garden beds. Adults occasionally enter structures near exterior light sources.
Blister Beetles
Elongated and soft-bodied with variable coloring that can include metallic blue, green, yellow, or black. Found in areas with flowering plants. They produce cantharidin, which is irritating to skin on direct contact. Avoid handling them bare-handed.
