Ants are social colony insects. Once a single forager locates a food or moisture source, it lays a pheromone trail (a chemical signal that recruits additional ants within hours). What looks like a minor nuisance can become a significant infestation within days if the colony isn’t addressed at the source.
Common signs of an active ant infestation include:
- Trailing lines of ants near food, water, or entry points
- Small mounds of dirt or debris near baseboards, cracks, or wall voids
- Ant mounds in soil, mulch beds, or lawn areas outdoors
- Sawdust-like material (called frass) near wood surfaces, which indicates carpenter ant activity
- Hollow-sounding wood near areas with moisture damage
- Raised visible mounds in lawns or near the foundation, characteristic of fire ants
Ants found in second-story bathrooms or attic spaces often entered through overhanging tree branches or roofline gaps rather than a ground-level crack, which changes where treatment needs to focus.
